I hear ya as well, though being only 24 my reference is a little different. I use Half Life (released in 98) as a bar for looking at how far things have come. I mean, I played NES games too, and platformers have certainly come a long way, but the mechanics have remained the same, whereas the visuals for FPS games (arguably the selling point) have seem massive improvements.

I hear ya sister! I started out with CalecoVision when I was a wee lad. I thought SNES was revolutionary! Little did I know what was ahead.
