I think it will continue to grow and change–they're talking about adding a lot of free DLC down the line–but what it is *now* is definitely limited in terms of activities. I'd like to say I'll let go of my bitterness one of these days, but I don't know...and by that time, the community at large would be far beyond me. I don't usually have a problem with games ultimately being a disappointment (beyond, you know, the disappointment itself), and I know that people who play earlier always pay a premium. (I'm still waiting for a price-dropped GOTY edition of WITCHER 3!) But even though I know this anger leads to the Dark Side, I just can't shake it!

I watched a friend play through SOMA on Twitch and it probably wasn't the best way to experience it. :DStacie Ponderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07784074536271206501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990955102330276556.post-57407177327802890672016-08-07T08:09:05.491-07:002016-08-07T08:09:05.491-07:00argh yep I forgot you had already posted about Des...argh yep I forgot you had already posted about Destiny last year. I was also annoyed about the whole rebuying content and collector's edition stuff but The Taken King actually turned out to be awesome. Initially the story seemed a little short at 8 missions but the game spreads out after that and there is a host of extra quests that start when you beat the game. It's the only game - along with Dark Souls - that has got me playing online with new people and I've made a lot of new friends that way and had some great times.

In addition there has been some free stuff added like the racing events and new missions, quests and a strike. It took them a year to get it right but they did it. There's certainly a big discrepancy between someone who picks up the game now for $30 when I've paid Five (!) times that but it is one of the games where it's all about exploring new stuff together as a community as it's released.

As for Firewatch - I cannot believe that sold more than SOMA. There's a lot of indie games in the $20 range that look so good–same goes for INSIDE which I believe is on Xbox but coming to PS. It's from the studio behind LIMBO, which I thought was pretty spectacular.

As far as NO MAN'S SKY, I hear ya. I waffled on it, but then I finally watched one of the leaked videos last week and it got me hyped. I do wish there was more narrative involved in terms of what you can find on planets, but I love exploring and discovering regardless so I'm super on board. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for waiting for reviews and/or price drops, though.

@Eliot - I miss DESTINY, I do. The gameplay was just so, so good. And from everything I've read, it *is* in a much better place than Year One, but I'm not over my Year One bitterness enough to jump back in, even if I'm missing out. I bought the Y1 season pass and felt really, really let down and like I was being bilked. And to me, their expansions are so pricy considering what fresh content you actually get. (Especially as someone who prefers solo gameplay 90% of the time.) Maybe in five years when everything is super cheap! :D Stacie Ponderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07784074536271206501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990955102330276556.post-23092827183220171042016-08-06T01:00:04.819-07:002016-08-06T01:00:04.819-07:00The solution to the problems in games 1 and 2 is D...The solution to the problems in games 1 and 2 is Destiny. I'm not being all fanboy about which game is better but specifically on the overall story the latest version has really fixed the initially bland narrative and characters and the endgame is actually rewarding - always ensuring there's a reason to play any of the activities. Actually, the sad thing is, at this point I CAN believe it. In fact in the UK (...I agree with all of the above. In fact in the UK (and many other places) it's actually worse because the expansion is so much more expensive - in the UK it's to be sold for £40, which is absolutely not =$40, no matter what anyone says about regional licensing, taxes, etc. You know what £40 is? It's the price of the new Batman game from an online retailer, or a preorder of another hotly anticipated game like Fallout 4.

Other companies seem to do a decent job of pricing DLC - The Evil Within's season pass was £15 - which had 3 packs with around 3 hours playtime each. The Witcher 3 season pass is £20 with a 30 hour playtime quoted.

The Red Bull thing is the final straw for me - north America only. So, rest of the world - pay more for The Taken King and wait longer to play bits of it.

Here's a cool game you can play - go to Bungie's forums and try posting a complaint on this - watch your post get deleted.Eliot Bladeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00094039963929376173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990955102330276556.post-15347422320991502932015-06-25T21:45:10.067-07:002015-06-25T21:45:10.067-07:00I played Witcher II (on Xbox 360) and liked it so ...I played Witcher II (on Xbox 360) and liked it so much more than I was anticipating! I thought the story was terrific and intriguing, surprisingly so. I was hesitant because I'm honestly not terribly interested in playing the "grizzled straight white dude" much anymore, especially when it comes to RPGs. While I have loved plenty of games with that kind of protagonist (Halo, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Red Dead Redemption, etc etc.), they're just not my go-to right away. But I'm definitely glad I picked up Witcher II.

While the depiction of women in the series is pretty iffy, I'm looking forward to playing III eventually. I *know* it's going to be fantastic (and I can't wait to play as Ciri)...I'm probably going to wait for a price drop or GOTY edition since I know there are a few major expansions on the horizon. It'll put me way behind the curve, unfortunately, but I've got ESO, Fallout 4 (in November OH GOD I CAN'T WAIT), and a fairly large backlog to tide me over in the meantime.Stacie Ponderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07784074536271206501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990955102330276556.post-61841311437930504182015-06-25T21:07:14.155-07:002015-06-25T21:07:14.155-07:00Stacie, has THE WITCHER series sucked you in yet?

An MMO is a GD commitment. Developers ...No kidding! An MMO is a GD commitment. Developers need to keep it engaging for players, and players need to...well, keep playing. When I browse the Crown Store (where you can spend real-life dough for fake-life items), I think "Holy crap, who is paying like $10 for a horse?" when I SHOULD think, "Thank Jebus there are people who pay $10 for a horse!" because they're the ones who keep the game alive.

I actually liked Amalur, although it definitely felt like a solo MMO. I thought it was a tad interesting, pretty to look at, and the amount of content was staggering (especially since i think I spent $20 on it). But even for all that content, it was so shallow! ESO has that same issue (see: the quest we agonized over that ultimately meant nothing), but it's well-written so the flaws aren't as apparent. And the Elder Scrolls lore is so friggin' in depth that the "move to an area, do fetch quests, move to new area" doesn't feel *quite* as shallow to me.Stacie Ponderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07784074536271206501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6990955102330276556.post-58931619150753639302015-06-24T21:51:22.227-07:002015-06-24T21:51:22.227-07:00You have to admire the guts it takes for people to...You have to admire the guts it takes for people to still be putting out MMOs.
